Hi guys-
Most of you have probably heard this from me already, but this is really important. At my alma mater, Corona del Mar High School, there is some really blatant discrimination and homophobia going on by the administration towards the drama department.

I urge you all to go to this website, because it explains it rather concisely: http://www.queerty.com/orange-county-high-school-principal-bans-gay-characters-in-drama-department-20090213/.

If you're moved at all by this, please do me a favour and call the number for the ACLU that's on that website. I've been contacting newspapers and various organizations in the hopes of getting this as publicly recognized as possible. I've been in touch with various alumni and we're all working our hardest to make this publicly known.

If you have any other resources to try, please do so. We're in contact with the ACLU and Lambda. I'm talking with some groups on my campus that work with gay rights, queer issues, etc. to see if they have any other suggestions.

I'm saddened and disgusted at Principal Asrani's behaviour, and I am doing everythign in my power to spread the word about what is happening at CdM. Even if you are not alumni of this high school, I urge you to become involved. This is part of a larger problem in our society that harbors hatred and prejudice against the gay community, and it effects everybody, whether or not you are gay, straight, queer, transgendered, bisexual, or transexual. Everybody deserves representation, and nobody should be banished from being represented.

Thanks for reading this.

Things I hate:
When people say things like "But, how do you really define freedom?" in class. Really - it doesn't help discussion, and you sound like a twit. AAAH.

My presentation went well today. It better, as it took me three freaking hours to do. So glad I had a presentation to make the second week of classes. Yeah. These classes are hard work, and to top it off, it's a really depressing subject matter. My dreams have been dark and gloomy. But, it's important to learn the truth, and I can't believe how unaware the world is sometimes.

I was just thinking earlier on the train ride to copenhagen. When I told people what classes I was taking, people usually asked my views on legalizing prostitution. I usually advocated for it, but I had no real grounds for that basis. I thought that this course might help me make a decision on the matter, but I'm finding that the more I learn, the more I realize the question is impossible to answer, and it's entirely the wrong approach to the problem of prostitution (If you view it as a problem). Just some food for thought, I guess.

After classes today, Raye & Lauren and I opted for an American lunch. I was sick of the surprise additions that Danish people put on their food that isn't on the menu (Even if the menu is in english, which is rare, they seem to find things to add to it) so we went to the Hard Rock Cafe and ordered some lunch and cocktails. So, so good. And I pulled a real Ali moment. The waiter was HOT and Australian, and as soon as he left the table I said something like, "If I knew my phone number I'd totally give it to him!" (I have a phone to use in Denmark, but I don't know the number for it). Of course, he happened to be standing behind me one table over. *cough*

I actually did ALL my reading for tomorrow, and I legitimately read them, not just skimmed them. I'm getting ready for bed now.

Plans for the week..
Tomorrow we're watching a movie for part of class. Wednesday we go to the danish red cross to meet some people who work with trafficking & prostitution victims. Thursday the former prostitute is coming to class to lecture (!!! SO EXCITING!!), Friday one class is cancelled...Saturday, I leave for Amsterdam (YEAHHH).

Time here is flying by. I already have a group of people that I hang out with. It's funny how quick people bonded and grouped together. Tomorrow, I have a "date" with a girl who I don't know very well, but we live in the same kollegium and started talking about our hair together a few days ago. We're going to have a hair straightening party.

It's the little things, really. Hard rock cafe, cute waiters, hair straightening parties.

Suffice to say I'm enjoying Denmark immensely. And now, it's time for bed. People in CA are still in school, and I'm going to bed. Weird...

strange things in denmark:
1) You are more likely to be hit by a bicycle than a car
2) They put mayonnaise on EVERYTHING, even if you specifically ask for no mayonnaise
3) In order to turn the lights on in my kollegium, I have to flip the switch down
4) Everything closes on Sundays because of the 'no work on sundays' thing, even though most of the country isn't that religious - they just like tradition
5) Danes won't talk to you unless you talk first. Then you can't get them to stop talking
6) You can have open containers of alcohol anywhere you like
7) They eat bread, beer, chocolate, potatoes and pork and they are the thinnest people I've ever seen
8) Minimum wage equals about $20 an hour
9) It's not unusual for dinner to take 3-4 hours. Meals are very long here, unlike America, where we stop talking and eat in 15 minutes.
10) They have no water fountains. Everybody drinks tap water because it is clean and safe.

I'm avoiding my work, can you tell? I spent three hours making a powerpoint presentation for class tomorrow on the psychological effects of prostitution. Soooo thrilling, what a happy subject.

This Thursday a former prostitute is going to come talk to us, and Saturday, we leave for Amsterdam.

I'm going to go make some dinner, and do more work. I'll be working up until about midnight, I think...

pictures from denmark.

I have to leave in thirty minutes to go to a film screening. I have not started my work or eaten dinner. Instead, I uploaded pictures. Gold star, Ali.

i saw POTC3. And i actually rather enjoyed it. I hated the second one, but this one was a lot better.

When thinking about the second one...Was 'the crackin' the BEST name thing they could think of?!

I leave for Denmark tomorrow. My suitcases are incredibly heavy and I don't think I have room for any more things, which is unfortunate considering i'll be buying lots of stuff in denmark.

i'm also a little tipsy right now.

happy memorial day weekend!

nutty week. Tuesday I went into the city to visit Marty. It was basically amazing. Tuesday we tried the lottery for Avenue Q but didn't get in, so instead we walked down to the water and walked around the city for a few hours. It was really fun. We watched Harry Potter that night, too.
Wednesday Justin came back into town so he & Marty could sign the lease on their new apartment. Marty & I went to Spelling Bee to get student tickets for the show. My student ticket just happened to be the last lottery ticket (which apparently was never claimed), so I was in seat 2A for $25 :) The show was so good! I dislike the soundtrack (save for The I Love You Song, and Pandemonium) but seeing it was a whole different story. I really, really enjoyed it. And, small world, I sat next to a boy named Nick, who goes to school and is in shows with Allie. Eerie. I also ran into Drew Minter (he works at Vassar) in a Starbucks. Small, small world.

The show, like I said, was very good. Very strong cast. The Rona irritated me greatly, though. Well, her singing technique bothered me, and because of her poor technique she didn't get some of her high notes (which ultimately affected my favourite song of the show). The last chord of ILY song didn't quite click in at first, but then, I'm extremely picky and my ear is very sensitive. Most people didn't notice.

After the matinee, we ran into some of Sasha's friends. We chatted, and then a thunderstorm randomly hit. Sooooo we were kind of soaked. We ended up staying in that night because of the rain, but it was still really enjoyable. We watched The Office, which I had never seen, and I made Marty watch the ANTM finale. WTF at their choice. I am angry at Tyra. Stupid Tyra.

Today we woke up late, ate breakfast/lunch, sat in a park, and I left around 1:30. Got back to Vassar, slept, did some work, watched the Grey's finale...seriously, wtf.

So, let's see. My final is on Tuesday from 1-3. That leaves Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday to study, and the same days plus Tuesday to pack. A bunch of boxes are being dropped off for me tomorrow, and Dad is coming sunday to help me pack. It's a little scary, actually. And crazy.

I am counting the days until Denmark. I cannot even describe how excited I am. It's the feeling I had when I found out I was going to Vassar. Just utter happiness. After a really rough freshman year, and a very trying sophomore year, I came out on top. I won. And I'm going to DENMARK.

The Women's Chorus CD got in today. I'm going to pick mine up tomorrow...I'm really quite excited to hear how we sound.

Oh, and WC is going to Morocco & Spain next year. How cool is that? :)

Vassar is amazing. Life is amazing. Difficult, a bit stressful right now, but amazing. I am going to have an awesome summer, and I will get through finals week.
